We went sailing out on the bay this weekend. Winds were a little stiff and provided for some excitement. Keri and mOm stayed ashore and took photos, not wanting to get sick from the rough water. We were able to sail up the bay tacking into the wind and making good time in the 20 knot winds with gusts reaching 25-30 knots. The boat was healed over to 30 degrees frequently and we think we got to 40 degrees a couple times!
All it takes is two sailboats on the same body of water at the same time and you have a race! We met this boat near the upper end of the bay. They passed us sailing down wind while we were on an upwind tack. They then fell in right behind us and the race was on! Their boat was larger than ours at 28 feet, and were catching us sailing up wind. When we turned and started running downwind we were able to out run them easily.
This is us on the left in the smaller yellow boat and our competition on opposite tacks.
Returning on the downwind run was much more relaxing. We ran the sails "Wing-on-Wing" and scooted all the way back down to the marina.
